Powell Panthers win first district title since 2006

The Panthers snapped Oak Ridge's 70-game win streak against district opponents, beating the Wildcats 60-58 in the District 3-AAA Tournament Championship.

Oak Ridge came into Saturday night with a 70-game winning streak against District 3-AAA opponents. Their last loss was to Powell in 2014.

The Panthers were tired of hearing about that streak and did something about. Caleb Tripp's three-point with less than a minute left gave Powell the lead for good and their first district tournament championship since 2006.

"They've beaten us I think 11 times in a row since I've been the coach at Powell," said Gary Barnes. "And every game maybe but one was a game we felt like we could've won. We think a lot of them and respect them and that's why it's emotional. We knew we were the team that could break that streak, we just had to make the plays at the end."

Josh Woods led the Panthers with 18 points, including a jumper off a spin move that tied the game at 53 with 2:36 left. He also shot four-for-five from the free throw line in the fourth quarter. Woods was named the tournament MVP.

Tripp finished with 13 points.

Both teams advance to host a region quarterfinal game on Saturday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. The winner of the District 4-AAA third place game between Maryville and William Blount will play Oak Ridge while the loser will play Powell.
