Tennessee Titans hire Mike Vrabel as new head coach

Vrabel was the defensive coordinator for the division rival Houston Texans last season.

The Tennessee Titans have hired former Houston Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel as the team's new head coach. The hire was announced late Saturday afternoon.

“I am excited to have Mike Vrabel joining our organization as our new head coach,” said Titans' controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk.

"Mike has a commanding presence and a deep knowledge for how he will attack this head coaching opportunity," she continued. "Throughout his football career, he has played for, been mentored by and coached with successful teams and organizations. He knows what it takes to reach that level of sustained success – he has seen it first-hand."

Vrabel won three Super Bowls during his professional career with the New England Patriots. In college, Vrabel earned back-to-back All-American honors with the Ohio State Buckeyes, being named Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year in 1995 and 1996.

Vrabel coached the defensive line at Ohio State during the 2013-2014 season. He then moved to the Houston Texans in the NFL, where we worked as the linebackers coach from 2014-2016. Last season he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

“This is an incredible opportunity, and one I have been preparing for my entire football life,” said Vrabel.

"We want to build a culture around winning, competitiveness and toughness," he continued. "Everything we do is going to be geared towards winning and being physical."

Vrabel will be introduced at a press conference on Monday. He is replacing former head coach Mike Mularkey.
