KCSO: One deputy hospitalized, three others taken to hospital after crash on Rutledge Pike

A spokesperson with Knox County Sheriff's Office said the deputy is injured but okay.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — UPDATE (May 2): The Knox County Sheriff's Office said they were able to get video from a security camera at a nearby Dollar General store to investigate a crash involving a deputy and a minivan.

They said the minivan was leaving the store's parking lot and was pulling up to Rutledge Pike, waiting to turn left. They said traffic was congested at the time, due to a red light at Spring Hill Road.

A car had stopped on Rutledge Pike, leaving enough space for the minivan to drive over both eastbound lanes and turn left and drive westbound. The driver tried to turn left when the report said a deputy "had no time to react" and hit the minivan's right-rear side at an angle.

The driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way, driving without a license, expired vehicle registration and at the time of the crash, deputies said their insurance could not be verified.

A witness said that the driver of the cruiser came behind her while she was driving westbound on Rutledge Pike. She said the patrol car switched into the left lane and passed her before the crash.

A Knox County Sheriff's Office deputy has been hospitalized after a crash on Thursday. They said that on April 28 at around 2 p.m. a KCSO patrol car was driving west on Rutledge Pike when a minivan making a left turn from a business pulled in front of it.

They said the deputy could not avoid the crash and after crashing into the minivan, the cruiser crossed over the road and into a business parking lot, crashing into a concrete divider as well.

Three people inside the minivan were taken to the East Tennessee Children's Hospital and the deputy was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in an ambulance.

The driver of the minivan was cited for driving without a license and expired tags, as well as failure to yield.

Captain Aaron Yarnell said the deputy is "okay" and may have a possible leg injury.
