Local actress has role in new Ben Affleck movie

Izzy Fenech is a sixth grade student at West Valley Middle with a small yet crucial role in The Accountant.

WEST KNOXVILLE - An 11-year-old girl who just started sixth grade at West Valley Middle School balances homework with acting.

Izzy Fenech has played parts on stage and in films. In fact, at the Knoxville Film Festival last year she won "Best Actress in a Leading Role" for her part in "Space Cadet." She was even in the movie "The Hunger Games."

"We were just extras but it was really cool, the set was really awesome," Fenech said.

The next movie for Fenech comes out later this month - "The Accountant," starring Ben Affleck.

"When they told me that I got the part we went to costume and they fitted me for the costume and we tried on like ten different outfits and the director picked which one he liked," she said.

The first moments of the movie trailer show a little girl huddled on a chair. That girl is Izzy.

"We did a bunch of the same scenes just for different shots so it was long, but it didn't feel long because I was acting a lot, so it was really fun," she said.

In the film, Fenech plays a character named Justine who has autism, who does not speak.

"It was all through my facial expressions and my movement," she said.

A screening audience was confused by a critical scene involving a jigsaw puzzle.

"I had to fly out to LA and re-shoot the scene and actually pick up the puzzle piece and give it to him because they didn't understand that through my motions I was trying to tell him that the puzzle piece was on the floor," she said.

In the film, the natural blond plays a younger version of a character who is brunette.

"I didn't really want to dye my hair brown so they convinced Ben (Affleck) to let me touch his hair and he convinced me to dye my hair," she said.

"We were trying to play it cool, but when I was feeling Ben's hair, my mom was over there taking pictures. But I didn't have my phone on set so I didn't take any selfies with him," she said.

Fenech's scenes are flashbacks in the film, so she doesn't share screen time with Affleck, but that's ok.

"I got to meet Jeffrey Tambor while he was getting his makeup done and he was really nice and he was really funny, too," she said.

"The Accountant" opens nationwide Oct. 14. This weekend Fenech and her family will attend the red carpet movie premiere in Los Angeles.

"It's going to be probably much better than I expected because I can't really even imagine how amazing it's going to be, but I'm just so thankful that they are giving me this opportunity," she said.

Fenech's other feature-length film credits include "Opposite of Earnest" which was shown at the Knoxville Film Festival in August.
