Dozens of nursing moms gathered in New Harvest Park in Knox County Friday morning, joining more than 500 cities nationwide.

They're all hoping to break the world record for the most women breastfeeding simultaneously.

"The Big Latch-on" is part of World Breastfeeding Week.

The goal is to raise public awareness about the health benefits of breastfeeding.

The Lisa Ross Breast Feeding Center says the event will help shed the stigma of public breastfeeding.

"These moms are really just clearing the path for the mothers to come behind them. So in many ways, their act of bravery by nursing in public and being more open about the fact that they're nursing helps to make it easier for the next mothers that are coming around the bend," says Sherri Hedberg of the Breastfeeding Center at Lisa Ross.

Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero signed a proclamation declaring Knoxville a part of World Breastfeeding Week.
