Knox County's emergency medical services contract expires next year, and Thursday we'll learn who is interested in providing that service. It could be a hotly contested battle.

The county's deadline for a request for proposal for the EMS contract is Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Rural Metro has provided ambulance service to Knox County since 1985. Their current contract started about 10 years ago, and has been renewed twice.

Rural Metro and American Medical Response, or AMR, have both expressed interest in the contract.

The contract is a lucrative one, and the bidding process has often been contentious in the past.
