Perseid Meteor Shower
Information provided by Paul Lewis, UT Space Science Outreach Director
The Perseid Meteor shower will peak this weekend on Sunday night into Monday morning. This should be a pretty good show this year because the moon won't rise until about 2:15 a.m. Monday morning and will be a thin crescent that will not provide much interference with the meteors. This is an annual shower we look forward to each year on or about this date. The meteors are actually small particles from the comet Temple-Tuttle that passes through the earth's path once every 33 years. The last time Temple-Tuttle was at perihelion or closest approach to the sun was 1998 and the next will be 2031.
The best way to observe any meteor shower and especially this one is to find a dark sky location, lay on the ground, feet pointed south and watch the show. Best time to observe is after midnight until sunrise.
