3:10 to Yuma is the remake of the namesake 1957 movie and it starts off with a bang, literally.
A stagecoach, guarded by a grizzled Peter Fonda, is attacked by a gang led by Russell Crowe, the part Glenn Ford created in the original.
Directed by James Mangold, who directed "Girl, Interrupted", it costars Christian Bale as a poor rancher who eventually signs on to help transport the captured bandit to a prison-bound train.
Ben Foster, in the role created by Richard Jaekel in the original, plays Crowe's top gun, a fierce killer, determined to free his boss and not afraid to kill to do it.
The violence is sudden and shocking, and the tension palpable.
But it's the climactic gunfight, in part an homage to "High Noon, "Gunfight at the ok Corral" and other classics, which will win over even those new to the western genre.
