Yum! National Ice Cream Day turns 30!

(WBIR) It's a tasty annual celebration of a billion-dollar industry that we really wish would happen everyday! July 20th is National Ice Cream Day for 2014.

The treat-filled holiday began in 1984 thanks to President Ronald Reagan, according to the International Dairy Foods Association.

Reagan designated the month of July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday of July as National Ice Cream Day.

In his proclamation, Reagan described ice cream as a nutritious and wholesome food. He called on Americans to celebrate each year with "appropriate ceremonies and activities."

According to IDFA, about 9 percent of all milk produced in U.S. dairy farms gets used to make ice cream. And the U.S. ice cream industry generated around $10 billion in revenue in 2010.

The group says vanilla continues to be America's top flavor followed by chocolate, cookie n' cream, strawberry and chocolate chip mint.
