BAYTOWN - A Southeast mother of five and her husband are expecting four more children.
43-year old Ruth Mochire is having quadruplets. Ruth is from Baytown but attends The Seventh Day Adventist Church in Beaumont.
Ruth Mochire is from Kenya. She has been in the United States for about a decade. She and her family were coming back from a month long family vacation in Kenya when she found out she was pregnant.
"When I came back you have to do a medical checkup before you go back to work in the refinery, so when they did my blood test, my foreman comes and tells me like 'Ruth you can't go back, it shows that you are pregnant. And i was like, to be pregnant at this age, it's so odd to be over 40 years of age and be pregnant and mid-40's is like impossible."
Ruth and her husband Joshua went to the hospital to get a second opinion. There they received the news that they were pregnant with not one, not two, not even three babies, but four. News neither had expected. The couple was not expecting anymore children. Ruth was in shock and disbelief. She could not speak of the news for two days, trying to digest the information.
Ruth and her husband are now trying to figure out how they will support a family of 11. The couple lost their home during Harvey and are now living in two, two bedroom apartments. Ruth is working to figure out how to fit four more people into their tiny space.
"We have stuff everywhere in the house because we were trying as much as possible to move what we could save, out."
In Ruth's native culture, women are shamed and embarrassed for being pregnant after 40. But Ruth says her husband and family have been very supportive after the initial shock wore off.
Ruth will be admitted to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston on Thursday. She will undergo five hours of testing for the babies to make sure their hearts and brains are healthy enough for delivery. Once they're born -- they will remain in NIC-U for a month that way doctors can monitor their progress.
"How do you go in, they take the babies out and then you leave the babies in the hospital and then you go home and come back, see them and then go home. I know I can get through it, it's just going to be hard to think about it."
But she is keeping her faith in God that he will see her family through this difficult time.
"With God it's possible and I believe when God gives you something and allows you to get in a certain situation, he already prepares a way. If you cling on to him, you will get out successful."
Her church family is stepping into help the Mochire family. They have set up a gofundme page to help with expenses. They are also collecting donations for the family. Ruth says they need everything, but her church family has stepped in and got the Mochire family care seats for the babies.
