Knoxville residents honor war veterans for 'Wreaths Across America Day'

Dozens of Knoxville residents went to the Knoxville National Cemetery to honor the country's servicemen and women on Saturday.

Dozens of Knoxville residents participated in "Wreaths Across America Day" to honor the servicemen and women at the Knoxville National Cemetery on Saturday.

"I've always had a special place in my heart for military history," Norman Shaw, an East Tennessee resident, said. "For all the Veterans that have served from the Civil War up to current conflicts."

Many who came out to the cemetery said this was a way for them to honor those who may no longer have families who remember them.

"It's a wonderful opportunity to see people that will take their time on such a crisp, cold Saturday morning," Chad Rogers, a coordinator for "Wreaths Across America," said. "To come out and place these wreaths and take a moment to remember these people because so many of these people have no one left in the world-- in their lineage -- to think of them."

Volunteers from across East Tennessee were able to go to two different cemeteries in Knoxville to place wreaths on the graves of those who may have lost their lives while at war. It was another way to honor the sacrifices of those who once served in the armed forces.

"I just feel very proud of every soldier who's buried in this cemetery, to be able to say I'm American," one volunteer with family buried at the Knoxville National Cemetery, said.

Knoxville's Wreaths Across America Facebook page said the group is already receiving wreaths for next year. So far, the group has received donations for 27 wreaths.

The page also shared a video of the service from Saturday afternoon.
