Sevier County Commission to vote on third phase of emergency warning sirens

The resolution on the table Monday clarifies December 31 as the deadline to apply for appropriate permits.

Sevier County commissioners will vote on on a third phase of warning sirens and a resolution that clarifies the county's debris removal deadline Monday night.

The commission previously designated December 31 as the deadline for property owners to remove debris from the November 2016 wildfire from their property.

The resolution on the table Monday clarifies December 31 as the deadline to apply for appropriate permits. Property owners will then have 90 days from when they are issued the permit to complete the debris removal.

Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters says nearly 90 percent of burned properties in the county are either enrolled in a FEMA private property debris removal program or have been cleaned up.

"I think there was some confusion," Waters said about the debris removal deadline. "We just wanted to clarify the resolution."

The commission will also vote on approving the third phase of the county's siren warning system.

The first phase included five sirens in Gatlinburg. The second phase included sirens in the county but near city limits.

Phase three will add sirens around schools in nine county communities including Seymour and Boyd's Creek.

Waters says the locations for the sirens were identified by the emergency management director. Waters expects the resolutions to pass in the Commission meeting.

"One of the things that we said after the fires was that we're going to take a look at what happened, what was done that was good, and what needs to be improved," Waters said. "This is just part of the steps we're going to take to make improvements to areas we could improve upon."

The Sevier County Commission will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in the courtroom 306 W of the Sevier County Courthouse.
