Three people and two horses were injured mid-Wednesday morning after a horse-drawn Amish buggy was struck by van in Lawrenceburg, authorities said.

The two-vehicle wreck took place on Highway 43 south at intersection of Highway 64, said Lawrenceburg Police Department Assistant Chief Daren Goolsby.

A preliminary investigation revealed a silver van struck the buggy from behind, injuring three of the four males inside it as well as two horses that pulled the vehicle.

The buggy had been traveling south on the highway in the outside lane when the collision took place, Goolsby said.

The three injured victims were transported to a hospital to be treated for unspecified injuries.

The van's sole occupant, a male, was uninjured.

Goolsby said the buggy was destroyed.

Animal control officers responded to the scene and determined the horses suffered non life-threatening injuries, he said.

"We're still working the scene to determine what caused the crash and whether the driver will be charged in the wreck," Goolsby said.

The department's Critical Accident Response Team) team is currently reconstructing the scene. Motorists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the area.

Lawrenceburg, a city with a population of about 14,500 people located about 80 miles south of Nashville, is the county seat of Lawrence County. There is a small Amish community living there.

It’s the largest city near the Tennessee-Alabama state line between Chattanooga and Memphis.
