Volunteers sing carols, pack boxes with food for the needy

Dozens of volunteers helped prepare boxes of food for the needy at Sweetwater Primary School Saturday afternoon.

Dozens of volunteers came out to Sweetwater Primary School to prepare boxes of food for the needy in the area Saturday afternoon.

Some even sang a few Christmas carols!

According to the city recorder, Jessica Morgan, Sweetwater's poverty rate is one of the highest in the area. Morgan said 86 percent of the children are on free or reduced lunch in the city school system.

For some of the volunteers, they said it gives them peace of mind to know some families won't go hungry this holiday season.

"It makes me feel good to know they got food," Johny Davis, a volunteer at the event, said. "And it makes me feel good to know they've been taken care of."

In the last few weeks, people have donated more than $10,000 worth of food for this drive. The boxed food, along with toys, will be distributed to more than 300 kids at the Sweetwater City Hall by the Sweetwater Police Department.
