Former Vol walk-on Ellis fighting for Titans roster spot

Titans tight end Craig Stevens announced his retirement on Tuesday.

That's good news for former Vol Alex Ellis.

It gives him a better chance of making the Titans roster.

Ellis joined the Vols in 2011 as a walk-on quarterback. He switched to tight end and in 2014 scored his first touchdown on a fake field goal. A fan fell out of the stands while trying to celebrate with Ellis after the score.

Ellis paid his way through school for three years until Butch Jones presented him with a scholarship in front of his teammates in December 2014.

He did it all while managing his Type 1 diabetes, not an easy feat.

Ellis had a career day in the Outback Bowl, then impressed scouts at Tennessee's pro day. It was enough to earn a free agent deal with the Titans.

He caught a touchdown pass in the Titans' preseason game with Carolina over the weekend and is fighting to make the 53-man roster.

The Titans will most likely keep three tight ends on the roster. Delanie Walker and Anthony Fasano likely have two spots locked up. It will come down to Ellis and Phillip Supernaw for the final tight end spot.

Ellis could possibly join the practice squad if he doesn't make the 53-man roster.
