Police cars at the scene in Blount County
Blount County officials were called to a house on Russell Hollow Road in Maryville Saturday afternoon.
The man living the house reportedly called his wife earlier that day, claiming he wanted to commit suicide.
His wife alerted Blount County police about the call.
They showed up at his house to check on him, where they heard shots fired a few moments later.
As a precautionary measure, officials called in additional police reinforcements, including a SWAT team, as they were unsure if the man was trying to harm police officers.
Once they entered the house, they discovered the man had committed suicide after police knocked on the door.
The incident was initially considered a standoff because officials weren't clear if the man inside was dead or alive.
