Some student at a Knox County high school got a generous gift from local college students on Wednesday.

"Calculators to Classrooms" presented the Paul L Kelley Volunteer Academy with a donation of graphing calculators. The devices are needed for most advanced math course, but often cost more than $100. UT student George Duffy started Calculators to Classrooms to encourage college students who no longer need the devices to donate them to high school students who can't afford them.

When he heard about a need for the calculators at the non-traditional Knox County school, he decided his organization could help.

"And when I found out they were actually requesting an amount of calculators, they're requesting 30 calculators, 30 graphing calculators, I realized that's something I could supply them with. And so this seemed the perfect school to make our first official donation with," said University of Tennessee senior George Duffy.

Duffy led a Cookies for Calculators collection drive back in April to encourage students to donate their unused devices. The drive resulted in 100 donations and inspired Duffy to turn the idea into a non-profit organization that can help schools across the country.

Calculators to Classrooms plans to hold another calculator drive in the spring and hopes to have 25 other colleges on board by the end of next semester.

University of Georgia and University of Hawaii have also expressed interest in helping with the drive.
