Officials in Grainger County sealed off an evacuated an area for close to four hours on Friday after receiving reports of a possible explosive device in the area.
According to a release from the Grainger County Sheriff, once officers arrived at the scene near Cherry Street in Rutledge around 1:00 p.m., they found a mason jar with a black metal pipe with a fuse attached.
Officials sealed off the roadway and evacuated homes within a 300 yard radius of the device for around four hours.
Members of the Morristown Police Department arrived with specialized EOD equipment to determine the device was safe.
Officials believe the device was at the location for several weeks before it was discovered.
