Every year
in Elkmont fireflies have learned to light up in unison! This event
usually occurs in the first two weeks of June, lighting up the forest in
waves! The park will close the road to Elkmont, and a trolley service
will run from the Sugarlands Visitor Center to the Little River
Trailhead for the firefly viewing. Thousands of people turn out for the
event, so come prepared! Trolleys run from 6pm-9pm up to Elkmont, ending
earlier if the parking lot fills up, and the last trolley returns at
11pm. This will be the sole transportation service for visitor access to
the fireflies. The cost of the trip is $1.00 per person. The dates for
the 2011 synchronized fireflies are June 4-12. Visitors can bring lawn
chairs and food and water that can fit in backpacks. So bring your kids
to see this amazing natural phenomenon!
