An East Knoxville church broke ground on a new sanctuary Sunday, one year after a massive fire destroyed its old one.

Mt. Calvary Baptist Church caught fire December 2010 just two hours before the congregation was scheduled to get together for a Christmas party.

"I stood here and just watched," said Mt. Calvary member Carrie Simmons. "It was like your whole history is going down.  Thank God it didn't."

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Mt. Calvary is using tithes, offerings and insurance money to pay for its new $3.4 million sanctuary, which Reverend Leroy Franklin says will be bigger and have a new state of the art PA system.

"We are doing more than building a church," Franklin said. "We have accepted a challenge from God t make a difference in the community."

The new sanctuary will take 14 months to complete.  It should be done just in time for Mt. Calvary's 100th anniversary.
