A Jefferson County woman confessed to investigators she made up an intruder and actually had shot herself to make it look like she was the victim of a violent home invasion.

According to Sheriff Bud McCoig, 48-year-old Joy Loundes, admitted the fabrication after her story began unraveling during the sheriff's investigation.

McCoig says while waiting for a Lifestar flight,  Loundes had originally told investigators that she had seen a white male with grey hair entering her house Wednesday night.  She said she retrieved her .38 handgun and got into a fight with the intruder.  She also said she was shot twice during the scuffle.  Loundes told investigators she had seen a white or silver van earlier that day.

However, while investigators were processing the scene and looking for the vehicle, the evidence did not match her story.

Investigators went to UT Medical Center where Loundes had been treated for the gunshot wounds and treated.  Sheriff McCoig says there she confessed to making up the story and shooting herself once in the leg and another time over the shoulder into the back.

Sheriff McCoig says while it while not part of her confession, the investigation revealed she was due to turn herself in to serve a DUI sentence Monday.

The sheriff is not sure if any charges will be filed.
