ATLANTA (AP) -- Health officials are trying to find the source of an E. coli outbreak that's been linked to 14 illnesses and one death.

The illnesses were spread across six states. Georgia had five reported cases, Louisiana four, Alabama two, and Tennessee, Florida and California each had one.

Three people were hospitalized. A child in the New Orleans area died last week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the illnesses occurred in April and May.

Until the source of the new outbreak is identified, health officials can only offer general advice for avoiding the infection: Cook meat thoroughly. Avoid unpasteurized milk and ciders. And, if you have a diarrhea-like illness, wash your hands thoroughly and don't prepare meals for others.
