Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero became the first recipient of a new leadership award Friday.

The East Tennessee Women's Leadership Summit awarded the first-ever Lizzie leadership award to Mayor Rogero.

The Lizzie is named after Lizzie Crozier French, the first woman to address the Tennessee General Assembly and the Tennessee Bar Association, and run for Knoxville City Council.

"Lizzie was known, she was a women's activist for her time. She was a leader in the suffrage movement, and she was the first woman to run for city council. So, I think it's appropriate that the first woman who became mayor is associated with her in this way, so it's certainly an honor," said Mayor Rogero.

Knoxville is the largest city in the state to date to have elected a female mayor.
