One West Knoxville church is harnessing the power of the sun to save energy.

Today was the official dedication for the solar panel at the Westminster Presbyterian Church. They were installed in April.

Few churches in the area have purchased these systems because the cost is made feasible through tax incentives, and churches are tax exempt.

Westminster received $15,000 funding through a grant program

"I think it's very important for a lot of small entities to get involved in this," said property committee member, Rick Rawe. "We have space, we have flat roofs, we have unobstructed access to the panels, the sun can shine on them. If a bunch of us can do that, it makes a big difference in the entire aggregate."

Since the system began operating the church has saved about $1,000.
