ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) -- Paraguay's Senate has voted to remove President Fernando Lugo from office in an impeachment trial, and his vice president was promptly sworn in as president.

Federico Franco is to serve out the rest of Lugo's term, which ends in August 2013.

Lugo said he would leave office even though he considered his ouster by Friday's Senate vote a blow to democracy.

The Senate tried him on five charges of malfeasance in office, including an alleged role in a deadly confrontation between police and landless farmers that left 17 dead.
