DYERSBURG, Tenn. (AP) -- Migrating Canada geese were shot and left to die in a lake on the greens of the Dyersburg Country Club.

The State Gazette reports two men used shotguns to kill the geese as they floated in the lake on Friday afternoon.

Someone called 911, but no officer was sent to investigate until the newspaper called police on Monday.

Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency Capt. Buddy Brien said the geese are in their molting season, an eight- to 10-week period during which they cannot fly. Shooting a migratory bird out of season is a misdemeanor state offense. Federal charges could be filed.

Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box said he contacted an unnamed person who admitted guns were used to drive the geese away but claimed none were killed.
