"Rafting in the Smokies has been in business for 34 years," says General Manager Claudette Geoffrion, who has been with them for 24 of those years. "We have 2 different trips. We have the upper Pigeon River which is for 8 years old and up and it's a class 3 or 4 rapids. We have the lower section for 3 years old on up and folks that don't want as much as action."
The facility sits right off exit 447 of Interstate 40 in Hartford, Tennessee. Two years ago, they expanded to add more features.
"We expanded our 10 acre island," says Geoffrion. "You'll go over a suspended bridge. Once you get there you'll have a swimming beach, swings for children. We have a picnic area, a zipline and ropes course, a nature trail. We're improving every year to have activities."
Throughout the summer, folks will line up to ride down the rapids.
"What's neat about the Pigeon River is that it is close to Knoxville, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge areas. Families can choose to do both sections. Everyone gets to do the level of excitement they like."
Rafting in the Smokies offers combination specials that start at $60 per person but there is no charge to come onto the island and enjoy their picnic area.
"There is no charge at all for people to use our island. We have turned out to almost be an attraction in Hartford for our swinging bridge. Some people people will stop and go across the bridge and have a picnic at no charge."
