Oak Ridge has given some firefighters the ability to write tickets.

City council took up the resolution at Monday's meeting and it passed.

It will allow three top ranking firefighters in Oak Ridge to issue citations to people who are keeping them from doing their jobs.

For example, people parking in front of a fire hydrant or in a fire lane.

The mayor believes it's common sense and will same time.

"When they arrive on a fire scene, car in front of a fire scene they can take action, don't need to have the police come and take action. They can move and continue on to the fire," said Mayor Tom Beehan.

The ordinance is part of Oak Ridge's "Not In Our City" program. It began last year and includes laws aimed at making neighborhoods more efficient and attractive places to live.
