A man now charged with raping and killing a Cocke County teenager has received a legal break.
A federal appeals court says Jeffrey Stock didn't deserve a six-year prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender. They say that 2009 decision is too harsh for the crime.
Stock received that sentence just before being charged in the rape and murder of Megan Maxwell. The 19-year-old disappeared three years ago.
Stock is set to go on trial for her death later this summer.
