Previous story

(July 14, 2012) The driver who crashed into a small car carrying a family from India last weekend in Sevier County, killing three and severely injuring another, is out of the hospital.

Shaun Dunlap, 27, of Marvyille was released from UT Medical Center on Thursday, according to a hospital spokesman.

Dunlap told Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers he may have fallen asleep at the wheel last Saturday when he was driving from Gatlinburg to Blount County on Wears Valley Road. He crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a car carrying Ashish Dembla, his parents and his sister.

Dembla, 24, and his parents died on impact. His sister, Kanika Dembla, 20, survived but was critically injured. She was flown by Lifestar to UT Medical Center, where she was listed in serious condition Saturday morning.

In the week since the crash, many in East Tennessee's Hindi community have stepped up to offer help to the family, and a temple in Lenoir City organized the traditional Hindi last rites for the family.

Charges are pending against Dunlap, according to THP.
