An Oak Ridge man is charged with trying to kill another man by stabbing him with a sword.

According to Oak Ridge Police Chief James T. Akagi, Jeffery Smith, 30, is charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and Aggravated Assault after a fight Friday with Michael Showalter, 30, of Oak Ridge.

The fight happened at 110 Van Hicks Road in Oak Ridge.  Police were called to that address around 9:15 pm on July 13.

Smith is being held at the Anderson County jail.  Showalter was treated and released from UT Medical Center.

The earlier version of this story states that Smith was charged with Second Degree Murder, because that is the charge listed on the Anderson County jail's website.   We regret the error.
