Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero got an up-close look at how the police department works on Thursday.

Mayor Rogero toured the KPD driving range and firearms training facility with Chief Rausch and other training officers.

Her tour even included a little on the job training in shooting firearms.

Chief Rausch says it's good for the mayor to have a first hand knowledge of the facilities and the training each officer goes through, so she is able to address community questions or concerns, and understand the department's capabilities.

"I think it's important that she sees where the money is being spent that is allocated to the police department. You know, not only our firearms side, but also our driving range. It gives her that perspective to be able to see the value for the dollar that is being spent down here," said Chief Rausch.

The Knoxville Police Department uses the training facilities for basic training and continuing education training.
Chief Rausch says KPD's training requirements exceed those required by the state.
