A man is facing several charges after he led Barbourville, Ky. police on a pursuit early Saturday morning.

Johnnie Paul Smith, 23, is charged with attempted murder, 5 counts of wanton endangerment, fleeing or evading police 1st degree, driving under the influence, menacing, resisting arrest and driving on a suspended license.

Officers said Smith tried to run over two officers who were manning a checkpoint.

The officers jumped away and avoided the vehicle.

Smith continued driving and approached another officer just past the checkpoint who was questioning someone else and had his back to the incident, police said.

The other officers fired at Smith when they saw him turn his vehicle toward the third officer.

Smith then led officers on a chase for several miles, until the officers managed to force him to turn his vehicle, lose control and stop.

Officers arrested Smith and took him to the Knox County Hospital. He was released a short time later and taken to jail after doctors found he did not need medical treatment.
