More than 25 years after his retirement, the former students of retired South High School choral teacher, Harold Mays, held a retirement concert in his honor.
People crowded a South-Doyle Middle School auditorium on Sunday to celebrate his teaching career that spanned more than 25 years.
One of his students said Mays encouraged her to reach for her dreams. "A teacher touches a life, and he certainly touched many people's lives and encourage them to go and use their talents," Director of the South High School Alumni Chorus, Belinda C. Hammond said.
Mays taught at South High School from 1959 until 1985. During his time there, chorus was one of the most popular courses at the school.
Mays now lives in Arkansas with his wife of 53 years. His son drove him to Knoxville so he could attend the event.
