The Department of Energy is preparing an environmental impact statement on the use of fuel made from nuclear weapons to power TVA nuclear plants.

TVA has tentatively agreed to consider using the fuel in its Sequoyah nuclear plant near Chattanooga and at an Alabama plant.

The mixed oxide fuel, also called "mox" fuel, is a blend of plutonium and uranium, but TVA says the variety it's considering is made from retired nuclear weapons.
