An Anderson County Sheriff's deputy resigned from his position after Knoxville Police found him intoxicated and carrying a gun Wednesday night.

51-year-old David Bowie is charged with public intoxication and possession of a handgun while being intoxicated.

Officers arrested Bowie Wednesday night in the Target parking lot on Clinton Highway.

The Anderson County Sheriff said Bowie resigned two days later after a career spanning 15 years with the department.

The police report stated officers saw Bowie walking unsteadily and smelled alcohol on his breath.

When an officer asked to see his identification, he said noticed a gun on Bowie's person.

The firearm was loaded with nine rounds, including one in the chamber.
