Knoxville City Council took a step toward improving drainage on a stretch of road that has become infamous for flooding.
Tuesday night, members approved a contract that should help reduce standing water along Prosser Road near the Knoxville Zoo.
"Vaughn and Melton Consulting Engineers, Inc." won the contract after the city received proposals from five consulting firms.
Councilman Daniel Brown, who represents that area, said the improvements are long overdue.
"Hopefully, with what we've done tonight and voted on that, we'll be able to improve that whole situation. It's something the whole community will be glad to see, especially with interest to Chilhowee Park and just the through traffic through Prosser road, because it's been an ongoing problem for years."
The city said all the improvements should be finished by the end of next year.
