Knoxville police identify homeless man struck by train

Knoxville Police have identified the victim as Gary Lynn Upchurch, a 59-year-old homeless man.  He's listed in serious condition at UT Medical Center.

Investigators have released no further information about why he was on the train tracks.

A man is recovering after police say he was struck by a train early Saturday morning.

Officers found the man lying under a train on the tracks near Seventeenth Street and Grand Avenue just after 4 a.m., according to a release from the Knoxville Police Department.

The railroad company reported the incident.

The man was transported to the hospital.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the man did survive but could not elaborate on the extent of his injuries.

The man's identity has not yet been released, and the investigation is ongoing.
