Nearly one-thousand runners participated in the "3rd Annual Butterfly Fund" 5-K in Sequoyah Hills on Saturday morning.

The "Butterfly Fund" raises money for the Children's Hospital and cancer research, treatment and services.

Family and friends of Emily Barger and Maddie Harrill started the 5-K run after these two girls died from a rare form of childhood cancer back in 2008.

The co-founder of the race, Christine Harrill said she was happy so many people participate in the run this year.

"We wouldn't be able to do the things we do if it wasn't with the support of the community in East Tennessee. We've got great sponsors that come out every year and just want to keep giving," said Harrill. "So we're very blessed. It's touching that so many people believe in our cause that they continue to support us in all of our events."

This race has raised nearly $300,000 for cancer research since 2008.
