Knox County sheriff's officials say a car found underwater at Carl Cowan Park Monday was stolen from a Knoxville man's driveway.

A witness called authorities shortly after 2 a.m. after seeing a vehicle roll into the water at the park on South Northshore Drive in West Knox County.

Rural/Metro Fire Department and EMS responded to the scene.  Knoxville Rescue Squad Divers discovered a submerged 2005 Ford Five Hundred with no one inside. The keys were inside the vehicle, and a rock had been placed on the gas pedal.

Sheriff's officials later determined the car belonged to Mark Townes, of Knoxville.

Townes told authorities the car had been taken from his driveway without his permission sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning.

The investigation is ongoing.
