This weekend some of the biggest country music songwriters behind some of the most popular country songs will be in East Tennesssee to celebrate their Appalachian musical roots.
It's the "Smoky Mountains Songwriters Festival" in Gatlinburg and it means a lot for artisits who started out right here.
Heather Maples grew up in Gatlinburg and will be one of the performers for the weekend. She doesn't have any big songwriting hits just yet, but she's glad this festival will take place in East Tennessee and give new songwriters advice and showcase currrent writers and performers.
"You're gonna come out and your going to enjoy it," said Maples, "You know it's going to be a show and you are not going to see this anywhere else."
A VIP meet and greet kicks off the festival Thursday night at Ober Gatlinburg Lounge.
You can meet songwriters who wrote hit songs for Garth Brooks, Diamond Rio, and Faith Hill.
Then, all weekend long, there will be performances by local artists and workshops to help future songwriters learn the craft.
The festival funs through Saturday night.
