Healthy tailgating
With high school football season underway and the University of Tennessee's first game right around the corner, it's tailgating time in Tennessee!
Enjoying a pre-game meal with friends and family does not have to add to one's waistline.
Healthy snacks such as veggies, hummus and pita chips can help cut down on calories, as well as exchanging classics like beef chili for white bean and chicken/turkey chili and eating a lighter dessert like a pumpkin pie dip with apple slices.
Food safety also is important to remember.
Hot foods need to be served hot and cold foods need to stay cold. Food should not sit out for more than an hour before being returned to a cooler to stay warm or cold.
Placing a cooler inside the vehicle instead of in the trunk can help keep it cooler longer.
It's best to avoid creamy or custard foods for tailgating. Foods made with mayonnaise are safe as long as they are kept cold.
