Two Knoxville Police Officers received high honors after saving a state trooper's life this spring.
Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero and Police Chief David Rausch awarded Andrew Keith and Steve Taylor with the Medal of Merit after risking their own lives to save State Trooper Sgt. Lowell Russell after he nearly died in a car crash.
A tractor trailer drove into the back of Russell's cruiser parked at I-40 near Gallaher View Road back in March. The truck driver said he fell asleep at the wheel before the crash occurred. Russell's patrol car skidded across several lanes of traffic before erupting in flames.
The two KPD officers arrived on the scene quickly and pulled Russell from the burning car.
Their award ceremony occurred on Monday afternoon at the Safety Building Training Room on Howard Baker Jr. Avenue.
