A fire that caught the attention of many people in the Friendsville community destroyed a garage containing a woodworking shop Friday night.

The call came in just before 10 p.m., and Blount County firefighters responded to the home in the 800 block of Summer Hill Drive.

Chief Doug McClanahan said the flames were visible from a distance because the property is on a hill.

When crews arrived, a garage containing a woodworking shop and office was full engulfed and threatening the nearby home, which was separated from the garage by an estimated 30-foot breezeway.

The 16 firefighters on scene had the fire contained by about 10:15 p.m., and managed to protect the home from any damage. Another metal garage structure nearby also was saved.

No one was home at the time, and the chief says the case will be turned over to the sheriff's office to determine a cause.

No firefighters on the scene were injured.

A pickup truck was lost in the fire.
