A portion of Cherokee Lake near Morristown is off limits to swimmers after officials estimate around 94,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the lake near Spring Creek.

It happened Monday morning in Morristown around 9:30 a.m. near Olen Marshall Bridge.

Authorities say a hit-and-run driver crashed into guy wires on a power pole on Cherokee Park Road.

The accident caused a power outage on two separate lines going into a sewage pumping station. The raw sewage overflowed into Spring Creek while the pumps were off for 47 minutes.

The Morristown wastewater division has posted warning signs advising people to avoid contact with the water at the Hamblen County boat dock, campground and nearby boat ramps.

The city started taking water samples Monday and will continue for the next couple of days.

Authorities have not yet identified the driver of the SUV.
