Knoxville Firefighters are standing at several busy Knoxville intersections this week to raise money for their "Fill the Boot Drive," which raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The Knoxville Fire Department has been raising money for the MDA for more than 35 years.

This is the first time since 2008, the KFD has collected money on the street. That year the KFD raised more than $15,000.

Joel Goucher, vice president of Knoxville Firefighters Association, said the whole department embraces this campaign.

"We get a lot of support. It's one of the many things we enjoy getting out and being active in the community," said Goucher. "This is a great cause that everyone's really embraced throughout the years."

The money raised during "Fill the Boot" goes towards MDA's medical service program, support groups and monthly costs.

To honor the firefighters' efforts, Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero announced this week as "Firefighter Appreciation Week."
