A pedestrian bridge that would connect UT and Knoxville's south waterfront is closer to becoming a reality.

The Knoxville City Council passed a resolution at its meeting Tuesday evening to continue looking into the possibility of a pedestrian and bike bridge on the south waterfront.

During phase one of the project, the city accepted a design concept and location for the bridge. Now, the plan will go a step further.

"The next phase will determine, can we actually build what is conceptually designed, and would we meet the environmental issues it takes to put it where we want, and that's going to take the next 12 to 18 months to figure it out," said Bob Whetsel.

Phase two is expected to cost about $296,000.

The city hopes the bridge will advance the south waterfront by creating another link to Downtown and UT that will draw in future development.
