Oak Ridge Celebration

Community organizers will commemorate the birthday of Oak Ridge through a heritage celebration planned for September 19, the 70th birthday of the creation of the World War II Secret City, and the first site of the Manhattan Project.

Festivities will kick off at 3 p.m., in Historic Jackson Square.
At 5:30 p.m., an historic talk on Oak Ridge, given by the City's official Historian Bill Wilcox will begin in front of the Oak Ridge Playhouse. Following Wilcox, Ray Smith will provide a brief update on the status of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. Next, Mick Wiest will present the Oak Ridge Heritage & Preservation Association's annual historic preservation award. Then, Mayor Tom Beehan will commemorate the day by reading an official proclamation designating September 19, 2012, as the 70th birthday of the World War II Secret City of Oak Ridge and cutting an official birthday cake. Everyone is then invited to a free special viewing of the movie "Fat Man and Little Boy" inside the Oak Ridge Playhouse, at 6:30 p.m., sponsored by the American Museum of Science and Energy Foundation.

For more information on the celebration, contact the Oak Ridge Convention & Visitors Bureau at 865-482-7821 or visit the website, www.OakRidgeVisitor.com.
