State Senator Doug Overbey met with TDOT officials Friday to discuss potential safety improvements to the Chapman Highway Corridor in Sevier County.
The concerns come after an accident where an SUV crashed into a church van head-on. Two people were killed and others were injured in that accident.
"The Department has informed me that TDOT is waiting for the accident report from the Department of Safety to determine measures that may be implemented immediately to improve safety along this stretch of road," said Senator Overbey. "Preliminarily, they are already looking at the condition of the pavement and considering center line rumble strips as a first step safety measure. The review will be started immediately with improvements to begin as soon as possible."
According to the state, approximately $10 million has been spent on upgrades to the Chapman Highway Corridor in the past decade, but Overbey says the area still needs more safety improvements.
