The mother of a Knoxville soldier says her son died from injuries sustained after an apparent "freak accident" involving a gun.

Specialist John Hargreaves, a 2010 graduate of Karns High School, died Saturday night. He was stationed as an infantryman at the Fort Carson Army installation in Colorado.

According to his mother, Mary Hargreaves, a bullet grazed the soldier's head, and he bled to death. She says investigators found Hargreave's gun at his feet, and believe it may have discharged after becoming entangled. The soldier was home alone at the time.

Family members say an Army investigation concluded the death was an accident.

Hargreaves' best friend and fellow military member Matt Vineyard remembers the soldier as a brother.

"I know hundreds of people loved him, and I wish they could love him as much as I do, and got[ten] to known him like I did," Vineyard said.

Both men enlisted during their senior year of high school. While Specialist Hargreaves joined the Army, Vineyard now works as Military Police as a member of the National Guard. Hargreaves deployed to Afghanistan in 2011.

"He did everything he could so we could be happy here. He went overseas and he fought, and it had to take a freak accident for him to leave us," Vineyard said.

"His positive attitude, is the one thing I remember the most about John," said Derek Witt, the soldier's former football coach and teacher at Karns High School.

According to family members, SPC Hargreave wished to continue his service, and had recently re-enlisted.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
